Dear Parents,

As you are aware, we have been having a healthy snack in the mornings ever since we began our chapter on nutrition.  This has been a real hit with the children and I have asked Mrs. "C" if we can continue with this practice for the rest of the school year.  She agreed that we could and I am delighted.  It has really helped the class get through that last hour before lunch.  Please continue to pack your child a healthy snack that is quick and easy to eat.

Just a reminder that social studies projects are due Tuesday, March 6th.  Please remember that our theme is about the U.S.A. so keep that in mind when your child chooses a color for the poster or the colors used to design the poster.  Red. white, and blue should do nicely.

March 12th, 13th, and 14th will be three days set aside for celebrating our school spirit.  Monday the 12th will be PJ Day.  Tuesday the 13th will be Crazy Anything Day, and Wednesday the 14th will be our talent show and U.S.A. Day.   Thursday and Friday of that week there will be no school.  Keep these dates handy.  Thank you.

                                                                                Sincerely,
                                                                                Linda Rider

Dear Parents,

Monday, February 20th, is President's Day.  There will be no school that day and the teachers will have an in service.  We will be busy making new work jobs for our classrooms!  Today we read about Abraham Lincoln and next week we will read about George Washington.  The rest of the month we will be learning about some of our  famous African American citizens in observance of Black History Month.
Thursday, February 23rd, we will visit the planetarium.  Please remember to have your child wear our red field trip school shirt that day.  Car seats are also required for those who need them.

Our Social Studies Fair will be held on Thursday, March 8th.  Our theme for the fair is "Hooray for the U.S.A."  The second grade will participate and will have a social studies project due for the fair.    Since we have recently been studying our city, state, and federal governments, the project will involve one of these three forms of our government.  The project will need to be prepared on a sheet of large poster board . (colored is preferred) It is to be titled: Our City Government, Our State Government, or Our Federal Government.   A picture of the building where that government's business is conducted is to be included on the poster.  (It can be a photograph or a drawing.)  Your child will need to write a paragraph telling who is the leader of the form of government chosen, what is the name of the group of people who help him govern, and the name of the building where their business is conducted.  Your child's name should be clearly written on the front of the poster. Pictures of any of these people would be a welcome addition.  The project is due Tuesday, March 6th.  I will send the social studies book home tomorrow to help with this assignment.

Have a great three day weekend!

                                                                           Sincerely,
                                                                          Linda Rider
